I did a search on that topic today. I found two good resources:

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Devices/USB

and

http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_hostif.php?hostif=USB

It appears that Ralink actively supports the Linux community with drivers - dongles based
on their chipsets generally get good reviews.

I chose a TP-Link WN321G which is under $10

On the German Amazon site many customers report it to "just work" on
Ubuntu.

I'm in the UK. I tried a couple of different dongles with no success, then bought a handfull of the Iogear ones direct from Technologic. I finally got them working (problems with wrong version of zd_b.o, problems with DHCP) but haven't deployed any in the field and I'm not keen to do so, since customers will complain if data transmission is unreliable and it could be a nightmare to troubleshoot.

What we have used sometimes is Ethernet-over-mains modules to avoid having to run cable, but these units are not reliable over more than a few tens of meters.
