I ended up doing this:

sudo dd if=512mbsd-latest.dd of=/dev/sdf
(remove and reinsert SD card)
sudo rsync -av /media/disk-2/ ../code/TS/7800/ts-7800-debian
sudo umount /media/disk
sudo umount /media/disk-1
sudo umount /media/disk-2
sudo fdisk /dev/sdf
    Command (m for help): d
    Partition number (1-4): 4
    Command (m for help): n
    Command action
       e extended
       p primary partition (1-4)
    p
    Selected partition 4
    First cylinder (4-1017, default 4): 7
    Last cylinder, +cylinders or +size{K,M,G} (7-1017, default 1017):
    Using default value 1017
sudo mkfs -t ext2 -v /dev/sdf4
(remove and reinsert SD card)
sudo rsync -av ../code/TS/7800/ts-7800-debian/ /media/disk-2

which works, and didn't burn too much time. But just for grins, if anyone
knows how to resize the partition, I'd love to know.

Thanks,
Craig
