I looked into general USB hotplug notification a while back.  I wanted an 
interrupt generated that a user-space app could look for.  Like too many things 
it's a crap shoot as to what services are available.  Best case is Linux 2.6 
with the udev system.  Linux 2.4 doesn't have that.  Devfs was replaced by 
udev.  That's fine and dandy if you're running full Debian.  Devfs under 
TS-Linux doesn't work for detecting USB hotplugging.  So I ended up having to 
poll for the /dev entry every couple of seconds.  Lousy solution.

It speaks to my larger annoyance w/ TS for not keeping the OS version up to 
date on all their hardware products.  "Left as an exercise to the reader" 
always pissed me off.
