That seems a bit odd but if it works, good. The typical set up would be 
to use inittab to set the default run level to 5 and have a line in the 
file that would do the startx for runlevel 5.

inittab is not the proper place for starting up an X windows program. In 
a typical X Windows system you would create a file called ~/.xinitrc and 
put the commands you need to start your application in that file. The 
commands should have "&" at the end or only the first command will be run.
