Usually there is a config.log file that has more info in it.  Search for "error" in that file and it should give you a good clue.

I downloaded crosstool-0.43 and the script from this yahoo group's file section. It spits out a ton of stuff, downloads sources, all that jazz. It appears to crap out working on binutils. I watched it "check whether the C compiler works" in other places and it says "yes" several times.
