Okay, the missing file is part of the host Linux library, not the embedded library. I am running Ubuntu, so I fetched the relevant parts with the aptitude command-line utility: `aptitude search curses' and then from the output of that `aptitude install libcurses-dev' (which it correctly interpreted as libcurses5-dev).
