Yes you can work without it.
Nut sure, but I think if you have the super cap, you can shutdown the board and reconnect without loosing PDP context,
or something like this.

.This is Varun. I am planning to use this GSM peripheral board. When I saw the shopping cart, they were offering an optional Farad Capacitor. Is it an additional component or a requirement or a requirement? Can we work without this?
