Interesting.  Our experience is the opposite.  The only CPU supplier we've ever 
had problems with was the Intel 386EX, which is big, has its own fabs, and 
extremely well known.  They even closed the fab at a time it was still making 
money, but wanted to retool and create space for newer product lines capable of 
making them even more money.  

Personally, we pay little attention to company size or how well-known/how much 
marketing they do.  We do recognize a good chip when we see it and have faith 
that good chips are hard for a small company to have and still fail.  Minimum 
quantities/price increases are always a risk, but thats where it helps to have 
some buying power and some visibility with your manufacturers/distributors 
(which BTW is easier if its a smaller company).
