Do you have both "PPP" and "PPP_ASYNC" selected in your kernel config? Be sure that modules ppp_generic and ppp_async are loaded or compiled in; you need both to do PPP over a serial port.

PPP_ASYNC in turn needs one of the CRC modules (CRC_CCITT, at least in 2.6).
