I've done this too, although, again it was a few years ago.
I don't recall any big problems.
There are 2 ways to do it.
You can statically link it, or you can build PHP as a dynamically loadable module.
Dynamic loading style is easier to build, but takes more space.
Static linking requires you build apache, build php, then go back and rebuild apache.
I don't know any advantages beyond that. Maybe the static is faster?

Anyway, I'd do the dynamic first, get it working, then if you need the space or the performance,
maybe go back and do the static, since you'll be more familiar at that point.

The only 'trick' I remember that took awhile to figure out was the apache config file.
There's a table of file extensions with how to handle them. You have to add an entry for
php files. If that's not added, it will ignore all your work and pretend to know nothing of php files.

There was also an older version of PHP that had a really PITA bug with sockets. So make sure
you don't get that one by checking the release notes, if you plan to use sockets.

Good luck
Larry

I did this same task a few years ago, as I recall it was a huge pain in
the ass. I finally got apache statically linked with the php module, I
think there is a copy uploaded in the yahoo file section.

Any problems send me mail.
