Hi got it sorted, think because I was in the fastboot mode that the file system was read only.
Works in normal mode now.

Does this happen when you are in /home rather than a mounted USB fs?
Your fs is not running out of space? Nothing appearing in the system
logs?

An strace of the compile may give you an idea what's failing.
