I wouldn't expect TS to drop Debian either - at least not until we
(the community, more or less) can convince them that OE is a stable
and easy build system.

It's true though - I think that TS really has no motivation for doing
anything aside from providing a usable root filesystem and kernel,
even if that means that it means that people end up backporting
software (or attempting to) in order to get it to work. I've found
that backporting modules for the 2.4.26 TS kernel to be awfully
hellish sometimes.

The only real motivation would be happy customers (which equates to
more sales). But if sales aren't slow right now, it's easy to take the
"nothing is broken, so don't fix it" attitude. TS even states that
their reference kernel and filesystem are really only for reference
and not for production units, which puts even more of the
responsibility on the community.

I originally tried out OE a few years ago too, and at the time, I
really did not like it at all - back then they used to use a
versioning system called Monotone, but I found it to be awful. A year
ago or so they switched to SVN, and now most things are done using
git, which has made for a substancial speedup. I think I was finally
won over when I started using it for the BeagleBoard - it was pretty
easy to modify / fix the JamVM bitbake recipe, and even to augment the
standard Angstrom distro to include it.

I agree - Janne, could you put up a simple diff even ? I could
probably write a howto from scratch myself, but it seems like a bit of
a waste of time considering that you've already got OE up and running
on your TS board. I'd rather not start from scratch if others have
already polished the distribution nicely.

Cheers,

Chris
