Take a look at the ring-buffer and serial port examples
here. That'll give you an idea of how the API can be
made 'clean' with all the implementation details hidden
as much as possible.

You want to make the code readable. So your code is more
'transparent' by hiding the key-pad bit-banging behind
the API.
