I guess it is looking for your root fs on the CF card? Try specifying
your root fs location on the redboot command line (ie, exec -c "...
root=/dev/mtdblock1").

It should work AFAIK. But building & booting your own kernel is a
good skill to learn, especially for RT apps.

I haven't tried. Instead I used a recent 2.6 kernel, high resolution
timers and low latency kernel config. Most of the benefits of RT,
without the hassle of hard RT. Depends on your needs.
