The same ways[1] it is done on any other linux system. Try googling, there 
are several helpful pages out there.

To get you started you could write your own program to send the modem the 
commands it needs and waits for the modem to issue it's "modem connect" 
message, or whatever, then hand over to pppd to do it's stuff.

Another option is the "mgetty" program. see http://mgetty.greenie.net/

I'm sure there are lots more possibilities
