you can connect justabout anything you want.  Note that the GPIO lines are 
3.3v logic so you may need a level converter if it's a 5v lcd.

I think technologix have released RT stuff with their official kernel, but 
for 2.6 stuff you'll need to search this mailing list.

Personally I prefer handing timing-critical stuff off to microcontrollers 
via the serial port or spi bus.
