Just to confirm something:
in order to use a pin as an input, must I set the output of the same pin to a 1 (tri-state)?

Yes.

Please note the second column of the table for DIO and LCD. It tells
you which bit in the 32-bit register corresponds to each pin on the LCD
and DIO header. There are 16 DIO and 14 LCD pins, for a total of 30 bits.
