Hi -

.sign := file contains GPG signature, to verify authenticity of the 
corresponding patch/source file.  See 
http://www.kernel.org/signature.html for more info.

.bz2 := bzipped file that has the entire patch

.gz := same, but compressed with gzip

.broken-out.tar.bz2 := bzipped tar image of individual, logical 
patches.  Useful for choosing to apply (or not) individual patches 
or patch sets.  Usually not needed unless you are cherry-picking 
patches or trying to back out certain patches for debugging.

.broken-out.tar.gz := same, but compressed with gzip

Yes, I'm quite sure you need to configure the kernel to your needs.  
Honestly, (and don't be offended), if you have to ask that maybe you 
should try to build a few standard kernels before jumping to RT.
