That could well be what it is. The MAC address is stored in flash,
and it's not impossible for it to get overwritten. There is a
Technologic utility that you can use to re-flash it. There's also a
range of MAC addresses reserved to be assigned by the owner of the
equipment -- I found out about them in Wikipedia.
