I have used jamvm and it seems OK. 

I have not been able to compile gnu-classpath yet. When I ran
configure, it got stuck because certain libraries were missing. I
managed to add the libraries, but then it got stuck again because
configure checks if the java compiler supports the option "-source
1.5". Trying to bypass this option does not help because, for example,
Object.java uses a generic, which was new in Java 1.5.

Which compiler were you using? I tried the gcj 4.1 compiler.

I don't plan on using Swing for production, but it would come in handy
during testing.
