Ha, just realised that mount -a  was running "&" and not getting far 
enough before tar -x 

Fixed. Now the volatile parts of the data logging are happening on 
ramfs. Just need to install cron to copy to "disk" every hour or so.

dmesg reports:
>RAMDISK driver initialized: 16 RAM disks of 12288K size 1024 
blocksize

ie 192MB of my 32MB :?

looks like that needs to be tied down a bit better. Maybe it can be 
fed parameters in the boot command...
