You can find the code I'm using on a TS-7250 to control some relays via an 
MCP23S08 chip connected over an SPI interface at:
http://www.ve3syb.ca/tmp/relays.c

The structure is probably of more interest to you. This is a much simpler use 
of SPI than some of the other available examples. I only need to send three 
bytes at a time and I have no need to read/return the data from the MCP23S08.
