The GNU Libc is not meant to be statically linked, so I advice you
against this option.

I have done this, on a TS-7260, but replaced it with my own root. It's risky,
but can be done, and then can be automated easily (we boot from network
and copy the new FS to the flash, then reboot).
But another option is using a chrooted instalation, i.e, install an etch
system in a subdirectory of the current FS, for example, /eabi/.
Then, you can type "chroot /eabi/ /bin/bash" and load the new environment.
