Current Debian stable is "etch", not "sarge", and the current x server
is "xserver-xorg" not xfree86. Everyone stampeded away from xfree86 a
few years ago when its owners became possessive and unreasonable.
I suggest you remove the xfree86 server, edit /etc/apt/sources.list to
take etch, not sarge, then apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade,
then install xserver-xorg, then try again.
Alternatively, you can specify "stable" in sources.list instead of
"sarge" "etch" etc, which will make it follow new stable releases in
the future ("lenny" is next..., sometime this year)

Your specific problem is that the X device driver, specified in
/etc/X11/*.conf, does not match your video hardware. Once you have
xorg, either it will just work (probably using the frame buffer
driver) or you will have a more modern set of drivers to choose from
