That worked, thank you very much. The distribution boots from the SD card and
produces a login prompt, however not without errors which are apparently
related to corrupt files on the SD card - that may just be a bad copy to the
SD card.

Indeed. In addition the /etc/apt/sources.list in the tarball also appears point
to some servers with a mixture of sid and sarge. It consists
of the following lines, which certainly don't point at etch stable:

deb http://armel-debs.applieddata.net/debian sid main
deb-src http://nl.arm.mirror.debian.net/debian/ sarge main
deb-src http://nl.arm.mirror.debian.net/debian/ sid main

Anyway, there is some progress in that I can log in as root at the console.
