I'm assuming you actually do mean the name contains an "*".
Remember the shell will try and match file to IP* on the command line, and
may have expanded this - depending on what files are present in your
current directory.
Also, I'm not sure that '*' is valid in a domain name - though if you have
have put the entry in your local /etc/hosts file it _may_ work.
I'd give your asterix machine a sensible name first and then report
problems - if any.
