Yeah, ok so the problem was the host compiler being gcc-4.x.

I haven't tried, so my comments may be wrong :)
According to my notes, partition 1 has a binary version
of the kernel vmlinux.bin file, so dd your new kernel into
that partition should do the trick.
However, there's no reason to replace the kernel unless
your particular driver needs to be part of the kernel.
For example, the sdcard driver gets installed by initrd,
so you could always have your driver loaded then too,
or later by an rc script.
