I prefer the D-Link DWL-G122 with Ralink 2571 chipset. The driver is
much better than the old zd1211-r83 (new version, zd1211rw, doesn't
work with 2.4 kernel). With the Ralink RT73 driver you can control
communication parameters, like fragmentation and RTS thresholds and
retry limit. It's a little more difficult to adapt an external
antenna, but you still can do the job. I can send you the
instructions if you will (for both the DWL-G122 and the zd1211
IOGEAR).
Note: if you use the RT73 driver with a DWL-G122 tweaking the driver
so LEDs are never on saves some power (between 60 and 80mW, haven't
done a detailed measure).
You can also get a zd1211 dongle with SMA connector for external antenna.

That's right.
