Thanks so very much for the quick responce!

After doing a modprobe msdos, I get the following:

mount -t msdos /dev/sda /mnt/my_usb
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,
       missing codepage or other error
       In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail  or so

So as you can see the i/o operations on the device seem to return  
inconsistent results.

I am beginning to believe the drivers have issues but don't want to 
dig into them if someone has already figured this stuff out.
