That's a hairy mess that you don't really want to walk into ;-)
While several have had a pretty great stint of success with the
community-driven kernel patches (which are actually those in the
mainstream linux kernel), Cirrus Logic has stated that they will not
legally be able to accept those patches into their branched linux
kernel, even if it means that their customers will be left in the dust
of the rest of the linux community.
It's definitely a lawyer's decision, and not so much that of the Cirrus
engineering department. If it were up to their finance department, they
would likely side with the engineers too :)
It turns out that you can very easily get a working 2.6 kernel for the
ep93xx series CPUs, and _that_ is the official linux kernel, by Cirrus,
for their customers. However, that kernel will have absolutely no
built-in support for the TS series boards, or any 3rd party
manufacturers for that matter. If you would like to maintain your own
(yet another) branch of the linux kernel, to apply patches for your
boards, including those for hardware errata, then you are free to do so.
Bravo Cirrus !
This is probably a major reason why TS has since begun development using
Marvell's ARM line.
Bravo TS :)
Chris
ps: Last I heard, I think that Cirrus did end up using some of the
community code anyway... way-to-go law devision!
