I remember having exactly the same problem you are reporting but I
didn't recall the prog I was using (maybe directFB, maybe
microwindows).

Some googling: http://wiki.buici.com/wiki/Disabling_Console_Cursor

ioctl(fd, KDSETMODE, KD_GRAPHICS);
It seems to do the magic.
