OK, FWIW, I've built a new toolchain using crosstools 0.43 with
USE_SYSROOT and then symlinked the arm-linux/sys-root directory to the
/root/of/debian/for/arm and all seems to be well....
Hmmm.... No idea why this is happening, but at least it appears solved
for the moment.
