Which SD writer do you have? I know that recently support for those
based on TI chips was accepted into the linux kernel. For instance, the
SD card reader in my laptop wasn't working a few months ago, and now it
is. I'm using the gentoo kernel 2.6.20-gentoo-r8

If i do an lspci, then this is the relevent information for my sd reader:

03:04.0 CardBus bridge: Texas Instruments PCIxx21/x515 Cardbus Controller
03:04.2 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394
Host Controller
03:04.3 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Integrated
FlashMedia Controller
03:04.4 Class 0805: Texas Instruments
PCI6411/6421/6611/6621/7411/7421/7611/7621 Secure Digital Controller
