Heat depends on the input voltage you're feeding to the regulator.
If, for example, you feed 15V in, then the regulator will be
dissipating twice as much power as the computer system. This will
happen even if nothing is wrong with the computer board. If heat is a
problem, the simple solutions are to lower the input voltage to the
regulator, or to use a bigger heat sink.
