I've been able to recover from such snafu's using nfsroot,
which can help with even greater problems like missing lib files.

And keep doing... I've in a rush on 3 or 4 occasions made a change to
sshd_config then HUPed sshd and lost all access to a machine that's a 24
hour drive for me....
