I had this problem too.
I found the minicom program a bit too functional. I found someone had
written a minimalist comm application and I stripped it down even further.
I hard coded it for 115,200bps and run it from the command line like this:
./microcom /dev/ttyS0
http://www.dattaway.org/microcom.tar.bz2
It has the "~" as the escape character so you can change ports, speeds,
and stuff. My serial cable is a simple homemade 3 wire db-9 to db-9
connector.
