Right, I'm not using the Y-cable now. I tried a powered hub, same result.
Tried a 2 amp
power supply for the 7400, same result. I don't have a high-speed scope handy,
but I'll
give it a shot on battery power tomorrow. This system will eventually run on a
battery
anyway, so that's fine.

Ok, I tried pinging the board, no response. I also tried unplugging the USB
device from
the hub, then unplugging the hub. No response to ping after each of those
tests. It
seems very locked up.
In short, I'll rig up a battery setup tomorrow. Perhaps some big capacitors on
the output
of the 5v switcher will have the same effect as using a battery. I'll try that
as well and
report what happens. Thanks!
