Here is another idea... The ZyXEL ZyAIR G-220 is a wireless B/G device, but
your USB port is relatively slow, and if the wireless communication is faster
than what you driver can manage it won't work well. So it will work OK with
wireless-B at 11Mbps, but not any faster than that. Trying to push it harder
will lead to "flakeyness", at least that's been my experience. It could be that
the device is trying to auto-negotiate to G speed, when the driver/usb
connection can't really keep up.
You can try "iwconfig wlan0 rate 11M", but I think you are better off using
iwpriv to set a parameter to tell it to use B, rather than G, or auto.
