I do not know about default permissions on TS-7400 (hard to belive that
they are as you listed), but many servers (ftp, ssh, mail) are picky
about permissions in parent directories. If you have world-writable
directories or own by some other than root (or not by user in question,
for example ssh reguires that ~user/.ssh is own by user and not
world-writable), they may refuse to run or accept logins. Sendmail, for
example has then option DONTBLAMESENDMAIL (or something like that) to
configure it to ignore permissions if you have some reason to do so.
Usually you don't have, you are just thinking wrong.
