Might you possibly have RAM problems? I've read many times that building a
kernel is a very tough workout on the RAM, and if a problem is ever going to
show up with RAM, that's when it will show up, and I've seen it myself. The
fact that it works occasionally sounds suspicious as well. If it's a reasonable
possibility, I would shut down the box, reseat the memory chips, and try again.
