I'm going to simply say the cross-compiling is the only real way to go. This
allows you to run the compile on your PC, which is much faster than the SBC.
Look at this ftp://oz.embeddedarm.com/downloads/Linux/ARM/ I recently read some
interested articles on the "Debian Embedded" mailing list. Look at the archives
on that, and I think it may be as simple as apt-get, or a download. Myself, I
chose the "beat your head against the wall for a couple days" approach to
creating
a cross compiler, but I'm not going to recommend that.
Then get ftp://oz.embeddedarm.com/linux24-ts11-Oct13-2006.tgz and read the
kernel-build-HOTWO from somewhere.
That will get you started.
