Rich,
Thanks for the info. I looked into what you mentioned and found the
same on my board, incorrect permissions. For whatever reasons,
running the -ts10 kernel gave me the correct permissions to the root
of the filesystem, hence why it worked when I tried that. But going
back to original kernel and chmod'ing solved everything.
