The only reason I know about it is that Kermit supports it - it used
to be distributed by Columbia U. It's a bit hard to find; it took me
a few hours to locate relatively recent code. But if you are
interested, I can dig up the RFC for it - 2217 maybe? that deals with
a 'remote telnet protocol' - i.e. serial-over-ethernet.

That might be very useful and I would be very grateful. I have a
laptop with no real serial ports, and neither a PCMICA nor a USB
dongle are apparently 'real enough' for a particularly finicky app
that I am dealing with. It's a windows app running under wine, so I
am hitting all the high points of frustration.... :-)
