X works with the generic frame-buffer driver. We were using it during
hardware development as a dumb X terminal server and running
OpenOffice and mozilla on it from our PCs-- very neat. Also, we've
tested with embedded/QT if you want a more lightweight GUI framework.
The X stuff is not installed on the SD card by default though you
could apt-get the packages.
Both the above use the video core in raw framebuffer mode and don't
yet make use of the hardware acceleration (bit-blitter, rect. fill,
off-screen compositing, double-buffering etc...) but are still quite
snappy.

The 64 pin header can do 16-bit ISA but not in the PC104 standard
way. Custom boards can make use of the full 16-bit bus, but there is
no PC104 40pin header laid out on the 7300.
