For scalability, maintainability, and all jazz, I'm trying to do
everything "by the book" - using the sort of software that anyone
might find on any server.... I'm trying to keep scripts to a minimum....

Yes, but.... I finally figured it out....
I was focusing on 2.x, but for what I need 1.3 will do fine...
To build 1.3, you have to build it for your native arch first, save a
couple of files, then make clean, put the files back, and then
cross-compile....
Anyway, I will write this up for the FAQ... Might save someone else a
headache....
