Have you just pressed <ENTER> at the
passowrd prompt, that is given it a
NULL password?
Some telnet daemons are funny about allowing
remote root access.
I'm guessing now because I've disabled telnet on
my board and use the
dropbear ssh daemon for access.
Create a non-root user using adduser, and see if
you can login with that.
Then you can "su" to become root.
