Why not just run a script at boot-time to create your link(s) in /dev?
I've done this before with complete success.

Jim is right, it is probably just easier to use the full path. I think
I had problems with this because I was doing tests with minicom, and
it didn't like the full path, it wanted something like /dev/ttySx.
I think that is where I had problems before.
I was also experimenting with a USB to serial converter at the time,
the physical boards from technologic (I have a SER-4 in house) are
much better to work with.
