Hey Ray (and Guiseppe),
I'll try out what you suggest and see what happens. It's very annoying.
I've just tried out Kubuntu and you can install from Synaptic
(admittedly an older kernel and the SMP kernel doesn't seem run as fast
(?? - I like Ubu... FC just seems to have fewer little things that
need buggerising around with.. pity).
I'll get back to you.
Guiseppe,
Sorry. I'm no further ahead than you. If I do find something, I'll be
sure to post so you can benefit.
Regards,
Patrick

I'm no expert on the topic but I thought 2.6.16 did a few things to hotplug
which tended to break things ... I spent some time trying to get the UVC,
Kvaser and a couple of other drivers working on 2.6.16 before giving up and
going back to 2.6.15.
At any rate, here are a few things that I've found useful to check when
having kernel module compile problems.
- Make sure the right kernel source is there
- Symlink /usr/src/<kernelname> to where the kernel source actually is
(Redhat has a habit of putting it in non-standard places like
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/<kernelprefix>). Make sure that <kernelname> matches
what uname gives you.
- If you download the kernel RPM and just install it normally (-Uvh or
whatever), you need to run "rpmbuild -bp" (at least I think it's bp) in the
SPECS directory to actually patch the kernel source
- If you're right out of ideas, actually try compiling and installing a
temporary kernel (this ensures that the source you have matches your kernel
- and that the source is there to begin with) - whilst you're at it, make
sure all the things you need are compiled into the kernel. You do this as a
last resort before you give up and go to bed - heck your computer might as
well be doing something useful whilst you dream about putting a hammer
through it right? ;-D
Hope this helps!
- Raymond

Hi all,
I'm just enquiring to make sure that my previous post about not being able

through to the group?

Hi,
I saw that this problem was already discussed lastmonth, unfortunately the
proposed solutions do not work for my case.
I have two identical laptops (two thinkpads X40) a Logitech QuickCam Notebook
Pro USB webcam and a Philips PCVC750K (ToUCam Pro Scan).
Both worked quite well on both machines which had an identical configuration:
up-to-date Fedora Core 4 for which I compiled and reinstalled pwc-10.0.11.
Now I made a fresh installation on one of the two laptops of the Fedora Core 5.
I saw that the webcams (in ekiga and in camstream) did not work (the carry on
working on the unmodified laptop). Nor did with a custom kernel 2.6.17-rc3
(latest available). Well, I tried to do as for the FC4. I tried both
pwc-10.0.12-rc1 and pwc-10.0.11, I tried them both on the 2.6.16-1.2096_FC5
standard fedora kernel and on my custom 2.6.17-rc3. In all the cases, with both
webcams the result is the same: with V4L1 (ekiga, camstream) a grey screen (even
though there are no apparent errors in the logs apart from
Apr 29 19:16:51 mirto kernel: pwc Failed to set LED on/off time.
), while wit V4L2 (ekiga) a generic error in opening /dev/video0 (also under
root, so it should no be a permission problem).
Suggestions?
Below, here you are relevant logs (2.6.17-rc3 with
