Next time, check with lsof if some program or library is using the device. i.e. lsof /dev/video0 Also, for me, before, is usb-audio driver was in use, it somehow didn't recognize the pwc driver would need to be restarted (after it had halted with "kernel: pwc Disconnected while webcam is in use!")
