I'm on SuSE 9.3 here and I've found a couple of utils on the distro. There's webcam which grabs an image and uploads it to an FTP server, which might be fun (I've got it working already) - but seems more limited than the one you mentioned. There's also camsource on the distro but (in spite of what it says when you type camsource -h, and there's no man page) it demands a config file, but the example one is not in the location indicated, nor anywhere else that I can find!
